Come Visit Us in Leadville

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum is located at the top of Harrison Street in Leadville, CO. The Matchless Mine Historic Site is only 2 miles away up East 7th Street. Come and see the past, present, and future of mining!

“An unexpected pleasure, the museum is housed in an old, large school building that has been meticulously restored. Each room has a theme and has artifacts from many phases of mining history. The quality of the exhibits is top notch and it is clear the present day mining industry has supported this museum with ample funding. Even if you have no interest in mining, the spectacular display of minerals from all over the world is impressive.”

“There is something for everyone in this museum.  It is truly an educational experience regarding mining in the United States, even though the focus was on Western underground mines. This was the second tour for me and I was surprised how much I learned in the Hall of Fame this time around. Even my 15-year old granddaughter learned something about the movers and shakers of the industry. The museum is very well kept and, although a bit on the quaint side, we all felt shivers thinking about those first miners panning for gold in the icy cold rivers of Colorado”

“Very informative! This is a great place to learn about the history of mining in Leadville, State of Colorado, and the entire United States. There is a lot of information for gold mining to coal mining and everything in between. If you’re in Leadville and have an hour or so and want to check out the museum you won’t be disappointed.”

History

Once a School, Still a Place of Learning

Once Leadville’s High School, the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum maintains the original 1899 Victorian architecture alongside the more modern 1943 Administration Wing addition, the 1954 Hennebach Wing addition, and the 1994 front facade addition. Visit us today to see how we have continued to provide education in this magnificent school house.

    Locations Rich in History

Come and visit the Matchless Mine Historic Site and see the location of one of the most prolific silver mines of the late 1800s. A steam-powered hoist raised and lowered miners and ore buckets hundreds of feet, dynamite exploded precise passages into the silver vein under the Matchless Claim, and even the famous author Oscar Wilde visited the miners here while in Leadville. While the historic site is closed from Labor Day to Memorial Day, you can also learn more at the Matchless Mine Exhibit in the National Mining Museum.
